Alice Roosevelt, 1902 ~ by Frances Benjamin Johnston
Alice Roosevelt (1884 – 1980) with her dog, Leo, a long-haired Chihuahua. Alice, with her beauty, wit and devil-may-care attitude was the center of much media attention in the early days of the “TR” Roosevelt Administration. A striking beauty, her outspokenness and antics won the hearts of the America people who nicknamed her “Princess Alice”.
I love the pattern of her dress. Very modern for those days I guess. In general the 1900s dress style is not my favorite, but this dress is a very elegant and stylish example. I wonder what color it had. I cannot help but love Alice’s expression, so typical of a self-conscious teenage girl who thinks the world is at her feet.
