Countess Virginia Somers (née Pattle), ca. 1856

Virginia Woolf was born Adeline Virginia Stephen on 25 January 1882. She was named after two aunts: Julia Stephen (née Jackson)’s eldest sister, Adeline Jackson Vaughan (1837-1881), and Julia’s aunt, Virginia Pattle Somers-Cocks (1827-1910), shown here. Leslie Stephen thought Lady Somers was the loveliest Pattle sister. Adeline Vaughan died the year before Virginia’s birth.
