The plate is stamped “E. White Maker N.Y. … Finest Quality A No.1.” Edward White was a daguerreotypist and plate manufacturer in New York City working out of 175 Broadway during the 1840s. He was listed in the New York City business directory in 1843, ’44 and ’50. According to the American Museum of Photography, “Edward White manufactured daguerreotype plates (considered by some to be the finest ever made) from 1842 until around 1850. White also operated daguerreotype studios in New York and New Orleans.”
