the Goldfish Bowl by Albert Henry Collings ~ ca. 1907

Albert Henry Collings was a successful portrait painter, most notably commissioned to paint King George VI in his coronation robes. He was a member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He executed a number of exotic, neo-classical nudes, such as The Tiger Skin (sold in these rooms, 13 December 1989, lot 216), comparable to the present. The model for The Fish Bowl was a doctor’s daughter, and caused a mild scandal within the family. The work formerly hung in a car salesroom, E. H. Services, off Oxford Street.
