Known as the “peineton” these large and elaborate combs were worn by the fashionable women of Buenos Aires. The illustration is taken from a portrait of Dona Manuela Suarez Lastra de Carmendia by Pellegrini. She wears the dress of the 1830s and a similar comb with upstanding loops which protrude from behind her high fashionable hairdressing.
