American or French Ball Gown, ca 1858

Bright pink tulle and taffeta dress; taffeta underdress; bodice with widely flaring neckline, short puffed sleeves, tightly fitted waist, sharply pointed center front and back, laced down the back, trimmed with ruffles of blonde lace and bows of pink brocaded gauze ribbon, skirt with five flounces trimmed with brocaded gauze, fullness evenly spaced all around, two garlands of artificial flowers tacked at sides of center front of skirt. Silk plain weave (taffeta), machine net (tulle) and silk bobbin lace; trimmed with silk ribbon, embroidered silk net, and silk flowers
