Helene of Mecklemburg-Schwerin, Duchess of Orleans with her son the Count of Paris by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, 1839
” Winterhalter shows significant details of dress, especially the lace, in this portrait. She wears a cap fringed with lace panels and bows atop her straight coiffure. Her dress has an off shoulder vee neckline edged with a narrow band of satin just above her lace bertha. Her elbow length sleeves are trimmed with bows and edged with long flowing sheer engageantes as seen in Russian portraits. Her full skirt is trimmed with a shallow and a deep lace flounce covering the satin of her skirt. A square-toed shoe emerges from her skirt. “
