Gertrude Neilson was born on 25 April 1780 at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Brig. Gen. John Neilson Jr. and Catherine Schuyler Voorhees. Gertrude Neilson married Rev. George Spofford Woodhull on 4 June 1799. His portrait painted by Gullager is in the collection of Princeton University and is illustrated and discussed in Marvin Sadik, “Christian Gullager, Portrait Painter to Federal America”, National Portrait Gallery, 1976, pp. 106-108.

Gertrude Neilson appeared on the census of 2 August 1850 with her son John, West Windsor Twp., Mercer County, New Jersey and on the census of 8 June 1860 with her son John, Princeton Twp., Mercer County, New Jersey. She died on 13 February 1863 at age 82. The child in the portrait may be the Rev. William H. Woodhull, who graduated from Princeton.
